What To Eat in New York City

B & I made a trip to New York in June 2016 (almost a year ago omg I’m terribly sorry for the lag, hope whatever I mention is still relevant!). He & his Bloomberg team (Jiehui, Melvin & Pam) had won the mixed category of the 2015 JPMorgan Chase Corporate Challenge (Singapore), and their amazing prize courtesy of JPMorgan? Free return flight & 3 nights accommodation to compete in the 2016 JPMorgan Chase Corporate Challenge World Championships! NYC has always been high up on my bucket list so I couldn’t miss the opportunity to tag along, hence we turned it into a race trip cum holiday of almost 2 weeks (:

As it would take me forever to blog about what we did the entire trip, I’m just gonna focus on my favourite part of visiting NYC – THE FOOD. NYC has the best food in the entire world, no kidding. The variety is just insane & of course almost everything we ate was superb (thanks to my awesome research skills). Some of places I mention might have multiple outlets, but I’ll just mention the outlet we visited. Here goes…

MUST EATS (in no particular order)

Momofuku Noodle Bar (East Village, Manhattan)

Pork Buns

Ramen

The pulled pork buns are off the menu, and are so good we ordered a 2nd helping! The ramen was pretty decent as well.

Katz’s Delicatessen (Lower East Side, Manhattan)

Pastrami on Rye Sandwich

Simply orgasmic!

Dominique Ansel Bakery (SOHO, Manhattan)

Frozen S’more

Knowing Dominique Ansel’s famous cronuts sell out really fast on a daily basis, we started queueing at 7-ish in the morning before it even opened, and managed to get our hands on them cronuts almost an hour later! There were a good 10-20 ppl ahead of us when we arrived. The cronut flavours change on a monthly basis and the flavour for June was Blueberry Elderflower with Lime Sugar which I really enjoyed. We also got the DKA which B actually preferred the over the cronuts.

The cookie shots are only available at 3pm everyday so we had to make a 2nd trip to Dominique Ansel, but who’s complaining when everything is so yummy!

Burger & Lobster (Flatiron, Manhattan)

Grilled Lobsters

Only USD20 for this generous helping! Way cheaper than its London counterpart, though I’m not sure if the taste differs since I have not tried the one in London.

Shake Shack (Madison Square, Manhattan)

Double ShackBurger

My personal favourite is the ShackStack which is has both a meat patty & a fried portobello mushroom patty!

Eleven Madison Park (Flatiron, Manhattan)

Dinner date with mummy @ EMP

Ranked #3 in the world when we visited. Food was out of this world, & so was the price tag. We had to book this months in advance but it was worth it!

Russ & Daughters Cafe (Lower East Side, Manhattan)

Levain Bakery (Upper West Side, Manhattan)

Warm, moist & chewy, yum!

ChikaLicious Dessert Club (East Village, Manhattan)

GOOD TO TRY (if nearby)

Bibble & Sip (Times Square, Manhattan)

Cream Puffs

Pod 39 Rooftop Bar (Midtown, Manhattan)

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Very nice ambience, strong drinks, tacos & very addictive spicy beer nuts!

Jean Georges (Central Park, Manhattan)

Chocolate Dessert Tasting

Another very good 3 Michelin Star Restaurant we had the privilege of visiting. Lunch set is very affordable at USD52. The dessert tasting was obviously my favourite.

The Bagel Store (Williamsburg, Brooklyn)

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Colourful Bagels with Cream Cheese

Super instagrammable. The bagels were’t great but the cream cheese made up for it!

Momofuku Milk Bar (Williamsburg, Brooklyn)

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Soft Serve Ice Cream

Brooklyn Roasting Company (DUMBO, Brooklyn)

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Ice Coffee

This cafe cum coffee roaster has a super hipster/cool vibe. The coffee was good & many cafes in Manhattan get their blends from here.

Blue Ribbon Fried Chicken (East Village, Manhattan)

The Works

The fried chicken was pretty decent, but the winner here was defo the fries!

Los Tacos No. 1 (Chelsea Market, Manhattan)

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Tacos

I liked the pork tacos best!

The Halal Guys (53rd St & 6th Ave, Manhattan)

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Chicken over Rice

So simple, but so delicious. Beware of the sauces though, B was crying the whole time while eating this haha.

Carmine’s (Times Square, Manhattan)

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Vongole Pasta

Hearty Italian food served in family sized portions. We nearly died eating this + a huge bowl of Calamari. Many Caucasians looked on incredulously haha. Queues get super long so try to get a reservation, otherwise sitting at the bar is a much shorter wait.

Clinton Street Baking Company & Restaurant (Lower East Side, Manhattan)

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Blueberry Pancakes

Magnolia Bakery (Rockefeller Center, Manhattan)

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Banana Pudding

Also famous for their cupcakes, which I didn’t get to photograph as they had melted by the time I got to eat them 😦

BrisketTown (Williamsburg, Brooklyn)

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Texas BBQ Ribs, Pulled Pork & Brisket

Nathan’s Famous Hotdogs (Coney Island, Brooklyn)

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Hotdogs

There you have it! It’s a wonder I didn’t balloon after this trip, seeing as these were only part of all the things I ate in NYC haha. Hope this is useful for all you foodies out there planning a trip to NYC!

XOXO,

Daryl
